"No matter where you are in your journey, that's exactly where you need to be. The next road is always ahead."
Half way through my son’s preschool year his teacher called us in for a conference. She was concerned that he was unable to retain information in class as well as his peers. I noticed this issue at home as well, almost as if he would just stare into space while I was speaking to him. He was always a sweet child and well behaved, but it was getting very difficult to get him to pay attention or repeat what was just spoken to him. He was also frustrated very easily and would almost shut down when things weren’t going the way he wanted them to. His teacher stated that he could not remember things and would become very withdrawn in the group activities. She also recommended that we start the Tomatis program in hopes that this type of therapy would allow him to focus on things in a way he was currently not able to.
I did some research and found Danielle’s listen-and-learn website and I immediately called her to set up a consultation. I could not have been more pleased with Danielle. From our initial phone conversation to meeting with her, it felt as if our families had been friends for years. I was comfortable discussing all of our concerns regarding our son. With her background and education I trusted that this program and her guidance would yield the results we were hoping for.
In the comfort of our home our son was able to start the program. I was blown away that after only one 2 hour session we already saw results. It seemed just to calm him down and he was immediately kinder to his little sister and more affectionate with all of us. After the first week he was trying new foods, he was not acting out in the car or the bath, and best of all he was able to sit with me and review the alphabet and numbers without getting frustrated and running and hiding behind the couch. After completion of the first 10 days we noticed an overall improvement of his behavior. There were days he would still be become frustrated and days he did not want t wear his headphones but Danielle encouraged us to stick to it and take our time and to really accommodate our son’s needs and emotional changes during this transitional period.
We started the second session a month later and it was a little more intense than the first session. Constant contact with Danielle and the additional reading materials she had provided me with helped me to understand that these changes are very intense for the brain of a child and that although he as reverting back to his old habits, he would come through the other side in a better place. We are now a month out from completing the program and I am happy to report that my son has made great strides in his learning challenges. He was retested by his teacher in the spring and the progress he made in 6 months was unbelievable. On his fall test he only recognized 4 letters of the alphabet and 2 numbers. On the spring test he recognized all 26 letters of the alphabet and numbers 1-20.
The entire process of Tomatis was challenging and emotional for our entire family but it was worth all of it to see our son thriving and excited to learn. We recently moved and feared that he would have a hard time adjusting to the new home, new school, and new city but he is excited to be in a new environment. He is eager to meet new friends everywhere we go and interacts with other children with such confidence! Tomatis has allowed him to focus on the task at hand and really enjoy learning new things. I have recommended this program to many people in my life who are struggling with all different types of learning and behavioral challenges with their children. I could not be more pleased with the results. I am also extremely grateful for the professionalism and genuine concern that Danielle had for our family and our son’s success!
